City Holds Blue Mass Honoring All Members of the FDNY and NYPD

October 15th, 2009

Members of the Department, family and friends gathered at St. Peter’s Church in Manhattan for the annual Blue Mass on October 15.

During the service, firefighters, EMS members, police officers and members of all other uniformed services were honored. The ceremony honored and recognized the sacrifice of police and firefighters and paid tribute those who have given their lives in service to their communities.

The annual tradition began in Washington DC in 1934 and has since spread to cities across the country as a way to honor “blue” collar workers.

New York City’s Blue Mass was organized by the Fire Family Transport Group, which provides transportation services to the families of injured, ill or deceased New York City Firefighters.

Following the service, the Terry Farrell Scholarship Fund dedicated a new vehicle to the Family Transport Group in honor of Firefighter Farrell from Rescue 4, who died on September 11, 2001. The Scholarship Fund provides education funds for the children of active, retired, disabled and deceased FDNY members or Long Island volunteer department members.

Local firefighters remember 9/11 by exposing their culinary secrets

September 16th, 2009

With the anniversary of 9/11 approaching, local firefighters are remembering the fallen with their culinary skills. For firefighters, cooking is a huge part of the job.

“None of us are tiny, right?” joked Escondido Fire Captain Ken Slaven. “We haven’t missed many meals.”

There is quite a bit of pressure to cook enough and cook well.

“When new guys come in that’s one of the first things we ask them is, ‘What can you cook?’” said Engineer Micheal O’Connor.

Jim Beam and the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund to Release Firehouse Cookbook

August 1st, 2009

According to the FDNNTV website:

Always seeking creative means of raising awareness for the fire service charity, Jim Beam and the California Chapter of the Terry Farrell Fund partnered to develop “The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund California Firehouse Cookbook and What Inspires Our Local Heroes”.  Slated for a September 2009 release, the special cookbook contains fifty recipes submitted by firehouses across the state of California, and will be sold to raise funds for and awareness about the charity.

Sheri Haupt of Beam Global Spirits and Wine explains her company’s involvement in this project saying, “We are trying to come up with creative ways to help our local heroes, to help these firefighters raise money and we thought this was a great opportunity, again getting their other skills out there other than just firefighting, and getting the communities involved, and having some fun with it.”

Demonstrating the preparation of “Pollo Asado Taco Salad”, one of the recipes that will appear in the cookbook, Mike O’Connor of the Escondido Fire Department explains that cooking is an important part of firehouse life in California and across the United States.  In his fire department he says, “The crew gets going.  We assign someone to cook or they volunteer.  Usually the youngest guy volunteers or the older guy will volunteer with him and teach him some of the recipes that have been long in the firehouse.”
