America Supports You: Firefighters Fund Helps Servicemembers

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

The Armed Forces Press Service wrote a nice article about us on their website.  Some highlights:

The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund recently became a supporter of America Supports You, a Defense Department program connecting citizens and corporations with military personnel and their families serving at home and abroad.

“We support military unit members in many ways, (including) by donating to the Wounded Warrior Fund and the Marine Semper Fi Fund,” Farrell said. “We also give direct financial support to a servicemembers requesting and showing immediate need.”

Servicemembers in need of this type of assistance can apply directly through the fund’s Web site or by contacting one of the two organizations to which it contributes.

Jim Beam supports Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund

Here is an excerpt from an article that went out on the newswire about Jim Beam’s limited special label bottles that were used to raise funds for our organization:

Jim Beam®, the worlds number one selling bourbon, and its distributors, proudly announce their renewed commitment and support of the Terry Farrell Firefighters Scholarship Fund. For the second consecutive year, Jim Beam® bourbon has created a dedicated quantity of commemorative label bottles to honor this important charity which provides much needed financial aid to the sons and daughters of New York firefighters. Last year, Southern Wine & Spirits (SWS) of New York, a wholesale wine and spirits distributor, initiated the program with Jim Beam, which was concentrated in the Manhattan area. This year, Jim Beam distributors in New York State, northern New Jersey, and Fairfield County, Connecticut have joined the program and will donate a portion of sales from more than 5,600 cases of the limited edition bottles sold.

Terry Farrell Fund special label bottles are available in on- and off-premise retail locations in the New York metro area and upstate New York, northern New Jersey, and Fairfield County, Connecticut, as well as in duty-free shops in Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia airports beginning as of July. Further extending its support, Jim Beam distributors in these locations will also donate a portion of sales to the scholarship fund from every case of Jim Beam® White Label 4-Year-Old Bourbon Whiskey, Jim Beam Black® Label 8-Year-Old Bourbon Whiskey and Jim Beams Choice® Bourbon Whiskey sold during 2007, up to a maximum contribution of $44,000. Since 2005, over $100,000 has been raised in support of this program.

Events are planned to celebrate this partnership on August 3rd at the East Syracuse Fire Department, in Syracuse, New York and the following week at the Mirage Nightclub in Westbury, Long Island. At the Syracuse event on August 3rd, Larry Romer, of SWS, will make a presentation to the brothers of Terry Farrell, a fallen firefighter who along with 342 of his rescue co-workers was a victim of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Scholarships awarded from the fund are open to a child or children of an active duty, retired, disabled or deceased firefighter who is, or has served in the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) or a volunteer department.

While keeping with the current look and feel of the traditional Jim Beam® label, special edition labels were created for this fundraising effort with slight modifications from the 2006 label. In place of the Jim Beam logo on the face of the bottle there is a fire hat bearing the number 343, signifying the number of firefighters in Terry Farrells squad who were killed on September 11, 2001. Additionally, the side of the bottle provides details on the sponsorship along with the website address for the fund, www.terryfarrellfund.org, urging consumers to visit the site to make a donation or to learn more. The 2007 bottle will also be topped by a red cap, signifying a firefighter helmet.
