City Holds Blue Mass Honoring All Members of the FDNY and NYPDThursday, October 15th, 2009Members of the Department, family and friends gathered at St. Peter’s Church in Manhattan for the annual Blue Mass on October 15. During the service, firefighters, EMS members, police officers and members of all other uniformed services were honored. The ceremony honored and recognized the sacrifice of police and firefighters and paid tribute those who have given their lives in service to their communities. The annual tradition began in Washington DC in 1934 and has since spread to cities across the country as a way to honor “blue” collar workers. New York City’s Blue Mass was organized by the Fire Family Transport Group, which provides transportation services to the families of injured, ill or deceased New York City Firefighters. Following the service, the Terry Farrell Scholarship Fund dedicated a new vehicle to the Family Transport Group in honor of Firefighter Farrell from Rescue 4, who died on September 11, 2001. After losing their chief, Nicol VFD gets a new truckFriday, May 8th, 2009When Nicol Volunteer Fire Department Chief Steven Allan Sullivan died of a stroke days after fighting a fire, the department lost its first chief, one who had built a solid reputation as a firefighter and a leader. The new fire chief, Gaston Wilson, said Sullivan’s death was a loss to both the department and to the surrounding community. But his death also had wider resonance. After hearing about Sullivan’s death, a non-profit organization created in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks decided to donate a new fire truck to the department. The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund, named after New York City firefighter and Dix Hills Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Terry Farrell, has been reaching out to fire departments in need for a number of years. Farrell himself died in the line of duty at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11.
