Rules for Award Participation

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are available to the children of firefighters serving or have served in the FDNY or City of Buffalo Fire Departments and all Volunteer Departments within the State of New York.

Scholarships are awarded on a lottery basis on the 1st Sunday in August of Each year. All applications must be received no later than 5pm on July 31 of each year. No application shall be accepted prior to January 15th of each year. Failure to comply with the aforementioned dates shall result in disqualification. Applications shall only be accepted via mail.

Scholarships are awarded ONLY to those children attending Vocational or Parochial Institutions. Awards are made from entry level to the college level of education. Each student must submit a individual application with single family applications being disqualified. No student may submit more than one application each year. Duplicate applications shall cause all of the students applications to be disqualified.

Scholarship awards can be awarded no more than four (4) TIMES TO ANY ONE APPLICANT. Minimum award each year shall be $1,000.00 with multiple awards of varying amounts possible depending on yearly funding.

Any application found to be fraudulent shall bar the entire family from filing applications in the future. Any award winner may be asked to verify information submitted on the application. Failure to respond to such verification request shall result in disqualification.

SPECIAL GRANT PROGRAM

Special grants are available to firefighters and their families across the nation. These grants are given out throughout the year based on need shown by the requesting family. Some of the examples are for special education, emergency medical assistance, line of duty death, illness of the firefighter, illness of the child of a firefighter.

The Fund shall also entertain requests for medical and fire service equipment such as defibulators, helmets, hoses, etc; where a clear need is demonstrated to the Fund's Board of Directors. Additionally, the Board has decided to make these special grants available to our returning combat service members.

Each special grant is reviewed by the Board and awarded only if a majority of the Board members agrees.

No grant shall ever be awarded for administration costs or equipment costs that are clearly the responsibility of the municipality where the fire department operates. No grant shall ever be awarded to pay salaries or benefits for firefighters.

SURPLUS EQUIPMENT PROGRAM

The Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund has established a "surplus equipment program' whereby we collect good usable fire equipment and gear from departments in the Long Island area and distribute collected equipment and gear to those departments, such as rural departments, lacking the tax base to buy needed clothing and equipment. We have successfully given out turn out gear, hoses, helmets and vehicles to several departments. There is never a cost to the receiving department. However, a waiver of liability is required prior to the transfer of this equipment from the Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund.

The Terry Farrell Firefighter Fund also accepts donations from any and all departments. We will arrange to have your surplus donation picked up and a waiver shall be given to any donating department. To date we have received donations from California, New York, New Jersey which have been given out to departments in New York, Texas and Florida.
